On Thursday I went to my Spanish friend Nieves house to bake! She said she would bake something typical from Oviedo and I told her I would bake brownies. Here is Oviedo (I dont know about all of Spain) but almost no one bakes there own cookies, or cakes, or brownies. My host mom told me she has never baked cookies in her life! After I met Nieves at the bus station we went to two different supermarkets looking for ingredients for my brownies. We couldn't find brown sugar, Nieves had no idea even what it was, so we used pure sugar cane because it was brown haha. Finally in the second supermarket we found vanilla extract which nieves had also never heard about! In the end the brownies ended up tasting pretty good but different from how they do in the US, this coming week I'm going to look for all the ingredients in the giant supermarket near my house. If this place doesn't have the ingredients, no place will! The typical cookie we baked is called Moscovitas. There so good but so sweet! Its funny how they measure everything here. Because all the ingredients are in grams they have to put everything in a bowl and have to measure it on a scale. In a pot we boiled liquid whipped cream, powered sugar, small shops of onion, and flour. Once this was boiled we had to let it harden and cool. We put tiny amounts on a pan and it cooked for a few minutes in the oven. When it came out of the oven they were like thin cookie crisps. We let those cook for a while and melted some white and milk chocolate. We covered the bottom of the cookies with the chocolate and then had to let that cool. The cookies are amazing! and because I gave up cookies for lent I only allowed myself that one day to eat them, so I ate about 10!
