A little bit about the food

Food here is soooo different. All I want right now is some nice American food. The food here is mostly all ham, lots of mayo, and nothing spicy. There is also a lot of mystery meat. I have stopped asking what type of meat it is and just started eating eat. The food here is not so bad, you really do get used to it. This blog post is going to be basically a showcase of pictures of food I've taken.

You know there is a Ham Problem here in Spain when its a Pringles flavor.  It's also a flavor of almost every type of chip.

Dinner one night.  A platter of meats, with cheese, bread, and Sidra.

One of my favorite dishes.  Chorizo cooked in Sidra.  Typical only here in Austurias but no other parts of Spain.

      .

Another one of my favorites.  These are garbanzo beans that are cooked in water with the meats you see on the middle plate and also with the potatoes you see on the plate closer.  The beans have to be cooked for hours.  These are not like garbanzo beans that we buy at home in a can.  These are natural raw beans that after all the hours of cooking are soft and has such a great flavor.  The meats there are all different parts of the pig.  Chorizo which is always good, Morcello (I think that is how it is spelled, blood sausage) (gross!), and the very outside of the pig with all the fat still on it.  And the brown thing you see in the back are fried bread balls.

I think this is sea urchin, but I'm honestly not sure.

This is basically a jar of mayo with some olives in it.  This "salad" has half a jar of mayo, some potatoes, carrots, pieces of ham and olives.  It's not to bad but all the mayo freaks me out.

Of course even when we eat veggies they are cooked with pieces of ham

This meal here is a typical meal of the "barrios".  Chorizo, french fries, and a fried egg.

  1. Nikki, I can't beleive they eat like this. High in fats and protein and deplete of the many vitamins, minterals and fiber we need! Where are the nice veggies that supply enzymes needed for good digestion? Where is the fresh fruit? Would love to tase the garbanzo beans though! Probably the sea urchin is the most healthy:)

  2. Haha I know Cata! But i eat lots of fruits for breakfast and usually for desert. Veggies are not a real common thing but we do eat veggie purees if that helps. And the sea urchin is probably the healthiest and the grossest!
